Jonathan Alvarez joined Florida Memorial University in the summer of 2020 as the first head coach for the women's flag football team.

Last year, the Florida Memorial Lions were invited to the NAIA Finals Championship Tournament in Atlanta, Ga. to compete for a national championship.

Prior to coming to FMU, Alvarez worked as the assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator at Hialeah Mater Academy Charter Middle-High School. He also served as the head coach of Mater Academy's middle school football team. Alvarez was named offensive coordinator of the Mater Academy girl's flag football program in January 2020.

He also has experience at the collegiate level. In 2017, he served as tight ends coach at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. During his tenure at St. Vincent, he served a dual role as both wide receivers coach and return specialist coach. Alvarez also oversaw regional recruiting in South Florida, New Jersey and the New York areas.

Alvarez began coaching in 2011, when he became the wide receivers coach at John A. Ferguson High School (Fla.). During his tenure at Ferguson, he also served as return specialist coach and junior varsity offensive coordinator. Under his direction, Ferguson ran a fast-paced offense that ranked in the top 10 in the state in total rushing offense and ranked in the top five in the state in total offense. Also, from 2011-16, Alvarez coached five student-athletes who matriculated to compete at the collegiate level.

Coach Alvarez is a native of Miami, Fla., and attended John A. Ferguson High School, where he was a part of the first and only team in school history to win a Class 6A District Championship and qualify for the postseason in the 2009-10 season.
