Lions Softball Drops Weekend Series Opener To No. 19 Southeastern Friday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – While Florida Memorial University didn't get a positive outcome of Friday's weekend series-opening game against visiting No. 19. Southeastern University, it was able to get a small morale victory in the "game within the game", preventing a perfect game, no-hitter, and shutout in the final inning before ultimately falling 16-2 in five innings at Miami Carol City Park.

How It Happened
  • FMU went down 0-2 early and saw its deficit grow as Southeastern plated runs in the top of each inning.
  • Trailing 16-0 in the bottom the fifth with an out on the board, the Lions had not had a player reach base – via a hit, walk, or error – throughout the game.
  • Zariah Spells took the Fire's relief pitcher to a full count and was able to draw a walk – breaking the perfect game.
  • Freshman infielder Ayr'Reka Gilghrest then snapped SEU's no-hit bid in the ensuing at bat with a single through the right side.
  • Florida Memorial head coach Pedro Herrera called for Jadlyn Dixon to pinch hit and she drew a walk, loading the bases for Emily Albelo.
  • Albelo singled to short, scoring Spells to put the Lions on the board and prevent the shutout.
  • FMU put another run on the board as Aashana Francis put the ball in play, allowing Gilghrest to cross home plate on a fielder's choice.
