PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. | Florida Memorial nearly pulled off a tremendous comeback, scoring four runs in the final inning, but it wasn't enough as the Conquistadors held on for the 5-4 victory over FMU at Broward College South Field.
FMU (0-2) got behind early and gave up three runs in the opening inning before starting pitcher Gabriella Pinto (0-1) settled in. The Conquistadors added another run in the third inning and kept the Lions scoreless through six innings.
However, in the seventh inning, FMU came to life when
Breana Morales scored the first run of the season while
Bryanna Curry also rounded third and scored run number two. Shortly after,
Breanna Reyes produced an RBI-single that brought home
Justice McKinney, bringing the score to 5-3. Next, Kayla Morales stood strong and came up clutch, taking a base on balls and picking up an RBI in the process, bringing home teammate
Heidy Olivo.
With runners on second and third, B. Morales grounded out to second base, ending the thrilling contest.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, Feb. 11 as they face Allen in non-conference competition. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. in Columbia, S.C.
