MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. | Florida Memorial warded off a late comeback attempt and earned its 20th win of the season in a 4-3 victory over Keiser, a 30-win team, at Walt Frazier Park at Carol City.
"We came out wanting to win and we fought until the end," said former first-team All-SUN selection
Ciara Justice. "Every inning, we put in the work on both defense and offense; we can do better and we will be better, but we got the win and that's all that matters."
The Lions got on board in the first inning when catcher
Ciera Taylor scored as a result of a fielding error, giving FMU a 1-0 lead. Moments later, third baseman
Mariana Gongora produced a two-RBI single that brought home both first baseman
Kylie Enrique and center fielder
Ciara Justice, extending its lead to 3-0.
The Seahawks responded with a run in the top of the second inning, but the Lions countered with a run of its own in the bottom stanza when Taylor generated an RBI-single up the middle, bringing home
Bianca Campos for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Keiser responded with a run in the top of the third inning, cutting the deficit to 4-2 in favor of the Lions. FMU's defense held on despite giving up a late run in the seventh inning, earning the conference win.
FMU pitcher
Gabriela Pinto (5-8) was credited with the victory, striking out five batters while allowing just three earned runs in her fifth win of the year.
"I think we're finally getting it together as a team and knowing each other and having each other's backs," said Justice. We're making plays that people don't think we can make, and we got this."
The Lions return to action on Friday, April 12 as they host Keiser in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Walt Frazier Park at Carol City.
