Lions split doubleheader with Ave Maria, fall in series

AVE MARIA, Fla. | The Florida Memorial softball team split today's doubleheader, winning 5-0 before falling 6-2 in the rubber match at the Ave Maria Softball Field. The Lions fell in the weekend series, dropping the series opener 4-0 on Friday.

The Gyrenes scored two runs in both the second and sixth inning to pull away from the Lions, who were held scoreless for just the fourth time this season, producing only five hits in the contest. The loss snapped FMU's 3-game win streak as Lions pitcher Gabriela Pinto was credited with the loss as she allowed just two earned runs in the low scoring affair.

The Lions took an early lead in the first inning when speedster Bryanna Curry generated an RBI-single that brought home Heidy Olivo for the first run of the game. 

In the fifth inning, FMU scored three runs as third baseman Mariana Gongora scored as a result of a throwing error. Moments later, first baseman Kylie Enrique produced an RBI-ground out that allowed Ciara Justice to score. Second baseman Bianca Campos then produced an RBI-single that brought home Curry for the third run of the inning.

The Lions added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when outfielder Aashana Francis generated an RBI-double to left field that scored Kylie Enrique to seal the deal for FMU, who earned its 24th win of the season, a program best.

FMU pitcher Emma Silva was credited with the victory, striking out one batter while allowing no earned runs in the contest.

The Gyrenes pulled away at home in the rubber match to clinch the series over the Lions. A full statistical breakdown will be provided shortly for game three.

The Lions return to action on Friday, April 26 as they host Webber in the final series of the regular season. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at Walt Frazier Park at Carol City.
