FMU softball defeats Warner 4-1 to advance in SUN tourney, eliminated by Southeastern

CLEARWATER, Fla. | Florida Memorial's softball team kept their season alive with a 4-1 victory over Warner, eliminating the Royals from the SUN Softball Tournament. However, the Lions would eventually fall 5-0 to Southeastern in the semifinal round, putting an end to a magical season.

Game 1:
FMU 4 - WU 1

Third baseman Mariana Gongora scored the first run for the Lions in the bottom of the second off an error from the Royals. She was joined by first-team all-SUN selections Heidy Olivo, Ciara Justice, and Ciera Taylor, who put together a trio of runs in the following inning. While Warner got on the board in the fifth inning, the Lions made multiple double plays throughout the game to take home the 4-1 win in the elimination round.

Junior Emma Silva (10-4) earned her second postseason victory. She pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned earn run while striking out three Royals.

Game 2:
FMU 0 - SEU 5

The Lions offense failed to generate momentum throughout the afternoon, as they only generated three hits to the Fire's 10. While FMU kept close with Southeastern for the first five innings, the Fire pulled away in the sixth to end the Lions season with a 5-0 loss.

Sophomore Gabriela Pinto (6–13) was credited with the loss. In 1.1 innings, she allowed four hits and one earned run. Silva came in relief and, in four innings, allowed six hits and two earned runs. Junior Breana Morales rounded out FMU's pitching trio, striking out one Fire in her limited time on the mound.

Florida Memorial ends the 2024 season with a 28-23 overall record, as the program achieved its best season in the short history of FMU softball.
