MOUNT VERNON, Ga. | Florida Memorial University earned a hard-fought 12–6 victory over Brewton-Parker, using an efficient offensive approach and a disciplined defensive performance to secure its first win of the season. Despite running fewer plays, Florida Memorial maximized its opportunities and delivered when it mattered most.
Sophomore quarterback
Marcelina Luke led the offense with a poised performance, completing 10 of 15 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown. Her ability to move the ball through the air played a key role in Florida Memorial's success, as the team averaged an impressive 7.7 yards per pass attempt. Luke also contributed on the ground, adding 19 rushing yards and showcasing her versatility.
The receiving corps played a crucial role in the victory, with multiple players stepping up. Freshman
Jayda Simmons made a major impact, recording two receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore
Kalyce Williams led the team in receiving yards with 45 on three catches, consistently helping extend drives and create momentum for the offense.
Although Florida Memorial ran the ball only three times, the rushing attack was highly effective. The team totaled 22 rushing yards, averaging 7.3 yards per carry.
Jada Grant contributed a key rushing touchdown, which proved to be a difference-maker in the low-scoring contest. Defensively, Florida Memorial delivered a standout performance, limiting Brewton-Parker to just six points. The defense was anchored by Sophomore
Yaniah Brihm and
Kalyce Williams, who each recorded five tackles. The unit also created two crucial turnovers, as Williams and Grant each came away with an interception. Junior
MaKhya Pedro added additional pressure with a sack, helping disrupt Brewton-Parker's offensive rhythm. Overall, Florida Memorial's ability to capitalize on limited possessions, combined with a strong defensive effort, proved to be the deciding factor in the win.
The Lions return to action Thursday, March 27, when they'll take on Reinhardt University. The game starts at 2:00 p.m. in Miami Gardens at Teddy Bridgewater Field at Bunche Park.
