Alex Suber is in his first season as the Lions’ defensive coordinator in 2025.
Suber arrives in Miami Gardens after spending the 2024 season in the Canadian Football League as the secondary coach at the Ottawa Redblacks, where he helped lead a secondary that produced 2 All-Pro CFL defensive backs, Damon Webb and Adarius Pickett. Webb broke franchise records for interceptions for touchdowns in a game (2) and tied for most interceptions in a game (2). Suber’s secondary helped the Redblacks finish with the best home record in organization history and make the playoffs for the first time since 2018.
Before his time in Ottawa, Suber spent the 2023 season as the cornerbacks coach at his alma mater Middle Tennessee State University. During his time in Murfreesboro, he saw All-CUSA DB Teldrick Ross finish as a Wuerffel Trophy Nominee and go to New England Patriots training camp following a stellar senior season. All-CUSA DB Tra Fluellen had his senior cut short due to injury but eventually signed and is currently on the New Orleans Saints roster, while sophomore DB Tyrell Raby finished as an All-CUSA newcomer.
From 2020 to 2022, Suber served as the receivers and tight ends coach with the Ottawa Redblacks. Under Suber’s tutelage, receiver Jaelon Acklin reached career high accomplishments in 2022. Acklin was the first WR to reach 1,000 yards during the year, while finishing as an All-Pro CFL WR despite suffering a season ending injury with 4 games remaining.
Suber spent 2018-2019 coaching receivers at Murray State University. There in 2019 he helped Malik Honeycutt to 1st Team All-American, 1st Team All-OVC and All-Newcomer OVC.
In 2018, he was named defensive coordinator at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas.
Suber served as a graduate assistant and football operations assistant at Bethune-Cookman University in 2017. He worked with the defensive backs and special teams while traveling ahead of the team to confirm all hotel and travel operations.
He began his coaching career with stops at Middleton High School (2015) in Tampa, Florida and Westwood High School (2016) in Fort Pierce, Florida where he had pass game coordinator-secondary coach and special teams coordinator-secondary coach duties.
Suber and his beloved wife Valentine have a son – Avi.
His older brother Allen Suber has nearly two decades of coaching experience along with Black College Football Hall of Fame honors and time on NFL rosters.
The Tampa, Florida native was an All-State running back and team captain at Jefferson High School from 2003-2005. Suber graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Middle Tennessee State University where he was a team captain and 1st Team Sun Belt Conference. He was instrumental in the 10-3 season capped by a 42-28 New Orleans Bowl win against Southern Miss in 2009.
Suber went on to make a name for himself as a defensive back in the Canadian Football League for 6 seasons. He was apart of the history making “Swaggerville” defense for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 2010-2014. He finished his career playing for both the Toronto Argonauts (14) and Saskatchewan Rough Riders (15).
