Markel Williams joined the FMU family as assistant women's basketball coach in Summer 2024.

A native of New Orleans, La., Williams was the assistant women's basketball coach at Talladega College. He earned a 28-5 overall record and went undefeated in conference (14-0) in the 2019-20 season, winning the GCAC conference championship but falling in the conference tournament championship.

In the 2020–21 season, Williams returned to play for the school's men's basketball team. He earned a 28-5 overall record and won the GCAC conference championship but fell in the conference tournament championship game before earning a trip to nationals, losing in the second round. During the 2021–22 season, the team went 31-6 and made the national championship game.

In August 2022, Williams started as a graduate assistant for the men’s basketball team and became the strength and conditioning coach. He helped the men's basketball team to a 31-3 record, the best turnaround in school history after the program went 1-27 the year prior. Williams coached eight additional programs on campus.

In August 2023, Williams helped Langston University's women’s basketball program to a 24-8 record in addition to working out eight programs as the strength and conditioning coach.
