Florida Memorial Women's Basketball clicked on all cylinders in the second half to knock off Embry-RiddleUniversity 83-68 in Sun Conference action, Saturday afternoon at Health and Sports Center on the campus of Barry University in front of a packed crowd. The Lions are now 5-5 in Conference play and 8-13 overall. Lady Lions moved up to 4
th place in the conference standing.
In the first half, Florida Memorial Lady Lions got off to a slow start and Embry-RiddleUniversity was able to open the game on a 9-2 run, then Florida Memorial quickly found its way back into the game trailing 24-20 with 6:20 to go, Embry-Riddle retooled the lead with a run of their own going ahead by eight,The Lady Lions played catch-up for the next of the half. The teams went into the locker room with Embry-Riddleup by 7 points 38-31. But this proved to be no indication of how the second half would unfold as the Lady Lions put on a shooting clinic.
Coming out of the break, the pep talk and game adjustment by Coach Stanbackseem to work, as the Lady Lions poured on the offense at the start of the second frame to tie the game up at 44-44 with 15:16 to go, the offensive explosion continued as the Lady Lions hit 9 baskets in a row and saw the Lady Lions put up 52 points output in the half. The Lady Lions went on a 15-8 run to dominate Embry-Riddle and extended their lead to 15, 67-52. They turned up the heat and held Embry-Riddlescoreless for most of the second half; the back breaker came when Embry-Riddle went on a run of their own and cut the Lady Lions lead to 9. Familiar with close game situations, the Lady Lions slowed the tempo, controlled the clock, and scored on 11 of 15 possessions to close the game and seal the win.
"We pressured Embry Riddle with our sound defense and we knocked down some key shots late in the game," says Coach Stanback.
The Lady Lions shot 40% from the field and 38.1% from the three point line, while holding their opponent to 38.71 % shooting in the second half. Lady Lions held Embry-Riddle to just 5-for-25 shooting from three-point land and forced 25 turnovers.
Diamond Colebrooke led a balance scoring attack forFMU with 24 points, 5 boards, 1 assists and 4 steal.
Abreona Cabell scored 12 points to go along with 7 boards while
Natalia Meja and
Nicole Collins chipped in 10 points each and
Brittany Starling pours in 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
Florida Memorial Lady Lions will return to the hardwood on Thursday, February 5 as they host Webber International University in a battle of the conference top three teams, Tip-off is 6:00pm at St.Thomas University.
