Florida Memorial University men's basketball team (8-9, 3-3 TSC) rolls past Ave Maria University on Saturday afternoon at Tom Golisano Field House on the campus of Ave Maria University.
Ave Maria opened the game with an 8-0 run, but Florida Memorial responded with a 10-2 run to even the score at 10-all. The teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half with Florida Memorial heading to the break with a 28-25 advantage.
Coming out of the break, Florida Memorial opened the second half on a run and was able to extend its lead to 11, 50-39. Ave Maria came back with a 13-1 run to take a 52-51 lead with 8:37 to play. Florida Memorial made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off Ave Maria 70-64.
The team shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, as opposed to 40 percent in the first; the Lions also shot 45 percent from beyond the arc and 12-of-20 from the charity stripe. Florida Memorial out shot Ave Maria, registering 45.8 percent from the field while Ave Maria was 36.8 percent, while out-rebounding their opponent by a slim 39-33 margin.
Samuel Dorismond led the Lions with 23 points.
Travis Mitchell finished with a double-double, 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Florida Memorial University Lions will travel to Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
