Florida Memorial Women's basketball fended off Barry University in a hard-fought second half to earn a 48-46 victory on Monday night at the FMU Wellness Center.
Florida Memorial spread the ball around in the first quarter and played good defense to close out the first quarter of play, tied up 11-11. After battling back and forth through the second quarter, the Lady Lions headed into the break with a 30-27 lead.
Florida Memorial stretched its lead against Barry in the third quarter, as both teams exchanged baskets throughout the quarter. Florida Memorial outscored Barry 12-11 in the final quarter of play and pulled away with a 2 point win.
The Lady Lions shot 32.1% from the field and 25% from the three point line, while holding their opponent to 29.8 % shooting in the second half. Florida Memorial held Barry to just 7-for-20 shooting from three-point land and forced 23 turnovers.
Abreona Cabell led the Lady Lions with 17 points, 6-13 FG shooting (4-5 free throw shooting) and grabbed 4 rebounds. Mya Jackson poured in 9 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, while Andrisia Sweeting contributed 7 points and 5 steals.
The Lady Lions return to the court Friday night (Dec. 30) when they host Eastern Nazarene College for a 6:00 p.m. start.
