Florida Memorial Women's Basketball clicked on all cylinders in the second half to knock off visiting Voorhees College 66-59, Saturday afternoon at Health and Sports Center on the campus of Barry University in front of a packed crowd for the 2016 Homecoming game.
In the first half, Florida Memorial Lady Lions got off to a slow start and Voorhees College was able to open the game on a 7-2 run, then Florida Memorial quickly found its way back into the game trailing 15-18 with 9:16 to go, Voorhees retooled the lead with a run of their own going ahead by eight, The Lady Lions played catch-up for the next of the half. The teams went into the locker room with Voorhees up by 7 points 36-28. But this proved to be no indication of how the second half would unfold as the Lady Lions put on a shooting clinic.Coming out of the break, the pep talk and game adjustment by Coach Stanback seem to work, as the Lady Lions poured on the offense at the start of the second frame to tie the game up at 53-53 with 5:56 to go, the offensive explosion continued as the Lady Lions hit 7 baskets in a row and saw the Lady Lions put up 38 points output in the half. The Lady Lions went on a 7-0 run to dominate Voorhees and extended their lead to 7, 60-53. They turned up the heat and held Voorhees scoreless for most of the second half; the back breaker came when Voorhees went on a run of their own and cut the Lady Lions lead to 4. Familiar with close game situations, the Lady Lions slowed the tempo, controlled the clock, and scored on 11 of 15 possessions to close the game and seal the win.
"We pressured
Voorhees with our sound defense and we knocked down some key shots late in the game," says Coach Stanback.
The Lady Lions shot 31% from the field and 14.1% from the three point line, while holding their opponent to 21 % shooting in the second half. Lady Lions held Voorhees to just 7-for-32 shooting from three-point land and forced 23 turnovers.
Shelby Miller led a balance scoring attack for FMU with 16 points, 8 boards, 2 assists and 2 steal.
Ashley Henry scored 14 points to go along with 14 boards while
Diamond Colebrooke chipped in 15 points each and
Abreona Cabell pours in 6 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.
Florida Memorial Lady Lions will return to the hardwood on Thursday, February 18 as they host Ave Maria University in a battle of the conference top six teams, Tip-off is 6:00pm at St. Thomas University
