MIAMI - The Florida Memorial University men's soccer team concluded the 2019 season on Saturday, falling 9-3 to the
10th ranked Fire of Southeastern University. Before the home finale, the Lions honored seven members of their senior class -
Caleb Acosta,
Rahjay Kerr,
Grant Peebles,
Nicholas Thompson,
Faris Brkan,
Luis Martinez and
Jose Isaac Romero.
The first goal of the day was provided by the Fire in the
18th minute of the match.
SEU's Chase
Hovious scored his fifth goal of the season to give Southeastern a 1-0 lead. Jake Van Der
Luit, Southeastern's leading scorer, gave SEU a 2-0 lead when he scored an unassisted goal in the
20th minute.
Hovious added his second goal of the half seven minutes later to give the Fire a 3-0 advantage.
Florida Memorial scored two goals of their own in the first half - one by Acosta at 27:58 and one by Romero in the
38th minute.
Southeastern would score twice more in the first half and led 5-2 at the break.
Later in the second half, Acosta scored his second goal of the game, his team-leading eighth goal of the season, in the
87th minute.
In total, SEU
outshot the Lions 20-14 in the regular season finale, including an 11-8 edge in shots on goal. FMU goalkeeper
Angel Garcia made two saves in the net.
The match marks the end of the 2019 season for the Lions. Southeastern, who won the Sun Conference regular-season title and the No. 1 seed with today's win, earned a bye into the conference tournament semifinals on Nov. 12.
