MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Sometimes things just click. Everything seems to go right and life is good.
Florida Memorial University's men shot 55.6 percent from the field, an even better 56.5 percent from three-point range, and 81.8 percent from the free throw line as they cruised to an 101-88 win over visiting Edward Waters College Saturday afternoon in the FMU Wellness Center.
7-foot junior
Mubashar Ali led the way for FMU, who will play a pair of exhibitions games against non-NAIA opponents this coming week before playing its final game of the 2019 calendar year at home against Huntington University next Saturday, with 28 points and 17 rebounds – both game-highs.
Senior guard
Jordan Martin turned in his best performance of the season Saturday, too – finishing with 21 points, eight boards, five assists, and zero turnovers in 38 minutes of action. Saturday also marked the 10th time this season that Martin scored at least 10 points – earning his point total on an efficient 5-of-9 from the field (5-of-7 from beyond the arc) and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
FMU (3-8) led the Tigers (4-6), losers of five straight, by six at halftime and methodically extended that lead to 19 by the midway point of the second half. The Lions' ball movement on offense and ability to limit Edward Waters to one shot on possessions on defense powered them to their first home victory of the season and allowed them to sweep the two-game season series with their HBCU rival.
Jordan Johnson and
Freddy Reeves Jr. each added 19 points for FMU Saturday. The two guards only missed a total of seven shots combined while Edward Waters had two players each miss at least seven shots from the field.
