Lions Battled the #6 Ranked Bobcats at Home

The Florida Memorial Lions baseball (20-23, 8-15 TSC) battled the #6 ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats (36-11, 17-5 TSC) at home on Friday afternoon. 

The FMU Lions were facing the NAIA 6th ranked Bobcats and the they were up for the task. The Bobcats took advantage of an error and 2 passed balls to take an early 0-1 lead, in the top half of the first inning. In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Lions would even the score at, 1-1. Jacquel Perry singled to left field and Axel Gomez doubled down the left field line. With Perry at 3rd base and Gomez at 2nd base the Bobcats gave up wild pitch that allowed Perry to score and Gomez to 3rd base. With Gomez at 3rd base, Pablo Delgado grounded out to shortstop but still picked up and RBI as Gomez scored. The Lions were up 3-1 after 2 innings of play. 

The Bobcats would pick up one run in the top of the 3rd inning, the score was 3-2 in favor of the Lions heading into the bottom of the 3rd inning. Edison Cabrera led off the bottom of the 3rd inning with a walk and then stole 2nd base. With Cabrera at 2nd base, Lion's catcher, Angel Colon, hit a towering shot over the scoreboard in right field to give the Lions a 5-2 lead.  The next Lions batter was Luis Rivera who earned a walk. Two batters later, Jacquel Perry hit a homerun to the deepest part of the field to score 2 more runs and give the Lions a commanding 7-2 lead. 

The score remained 7-2 in favor of the Lions until the top of the 6th inning when the Bobcats started to get to Lion's starting pitcher, Christian Rivera. The Bobcats would score 2 runs off Rivera and that's when FMU Head Coach, Tino Burgos went to his bullpen. Kyle Parks came in to relief and inherited a runner on second base who would eventually score on a wild pitch. After 6 innings, the Lions were up 7-5. 

In the top of the 7th inning the Bobcats would score 3 runs, on 3 hits, and took advantage of a Lion's fielding error. The score was 7-8 in favor of the Bobcats heading into the bottom of the 7th inning. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Edison Cabrera hit a double but would get thrown out at 3rd base as he tried to stretch it into a triple. The Lions would leave 2 runners stranded on the bases as the sore remained 7-8, in favor of the Bobcats.  

In the bottom of the 9th inning, Raymond Guerrero hit a double to get things going for the Lions. The next two Lions batters would get walked thus loading the bases. With the tying run on 3rd base and the winning run on 2nd base, the Lions were looking to win in walk-off fashion. The Lions would send pitch hitter, DJ Brown to the plate. Brown would strikeout for the 2nd out of the inning and Luis Rivera would get picked off at 1st base. That double play would end the game as the Bobcats captured the victory, 7-8. 

The Lions are currently in the 7th spot of The Sun Conference standings just 1 1/2 games behind Thomas University. The Lions swept Thomas earlier in the season, so they hold the advantage should a tie breaker be required.

The Lions will play a double header, tomorrow, Saturday, April 20th at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
