(MIAMI GARDENS, FLA) -- In their season opener the Lions dropped an 0-3 set to the visiting Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, Tuesday, August 20. The Mountaineers are ranked No. 10 in the NAIA preseason volleyball rankings released on August 14.
In the opening set the visitors took an early 3-1 lead over the home team but an attacking error from the Mountaineers and a block by senior
Ivana Maric and junior
Sammyra Albarran tied the game.
The Lions took the lead after a service ace by freshman
Biancaliz Cruz before their opponents answered back with a kill. Eastern Oregon would end up taking the first set 25-20.
Leading the pack for the Lions was junior
Daphinie Correa who finished with seven kills. Cruz and Albarran each added five kills to the match.
Maric led the team with two blocks while junior
Francheska Rivera put up 13 assists. Junior
Keisha Santana finished with double-digits in digs with 14. Senior
Yulianna Charris finished with three aces for the Lions.
The Lions attacked the ball 110 times throughout the night but tough defense from the Mountaineers kept a lot of plays alive.
Florida Memorial will return to action Thursday, August 22 at 6:30 P.M. against Missouri Baptist.
