(AVE MARIA, FLA) -- The Florida Memorial University women's volleyball team defeated Ave Maria on the road, Saturday, September 14.
Now 2-0 in conference play and 6-4 overall, the Lions have won four straight games to start their conference run on a positive note. In the first set FMU outscored the Gyrenes 25-16.
The Lions took a 2-1 lead after a block by junior
Sammyra Albarran and senior
Ivana Maric. AMU was able to keep the score within three for the first few points before the Lions pulled away to a comfortable 18-10 advantage.
Leading 1-0 the Lions once again was victorious in the second set, 25-18. Correa and Albarran coupled for 11 kills in set two to help FMU take a 2-0 lead. The Gyrenes halted the Lions hope of a 3-0 shutout by taking the third set 19-25.
The fourth and final set went 25-14 in favor of Florida Memorial. Key players for the Lions were Sophomore
Rachele Mancinelli, Albarran and Correa. Mancinelli and Albarran each finished with 11 kills while Correa added 10. Freshman
Biancaliz Cruz added another nine kills for the Lions.
Junior
Keisha Santana finished with a game-high 30 digs while classmate
Francheska Rivera dished out 24 assists. Junior
Alanis Santana also added 17 assists in the win. Mancinelli, Rivera and Correa combined for seven aces while Mancinelli, Correa and Maric each contributed four blocks.
The Lions will travel to Johnson & Wales, Wednesday, September 18 for a 7 P.M. start.
