NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – In spite of
Isis Lane's return to Florida Memorial University's lineup and her team-leading 19-point, 15-rebound double-double, the Lions fell behind early and never fully got back into the game as they fell 76-66 to host Johnson & Wales University Thursday night in the Wildcat Center.
Florida Memorial (8-10, 3-5. Sun Conference), which fell into a 6-0 hole not even three minutes into the game, trailed by 10 going into the fourth quarter but cut that deficit to three (55-52) with 7:44 left in the game. Johnson & Wales responded with a 16-4 run over the next five minutes to pull away from the Lady Lions and cement the 76-66 final.
Lane played all but one minute of the 40-minute contest in her first action back since missing the past two games. She picked up right where she left out, adding to her averages as the team's leading scorer and rebounder this season. FMU junior guard
Airneisha Gamble continued her strong play, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, marking her third straight game scoring at least 14 points.
Ashleign Gary contributed 10 points in 16 minutes for the Lady Lions, who will host Keiser University Saturday (Jan. 18) and still mostly control their own destiny in the Sun Conference race, while
Danielle Bailey chipped in with eight points and three boards.
Johnson & Wales (12-4, 6-2) had four players score in double figures Thursday, led by Tianna Ayulo's 23 points and 11 rebounds.
