MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – For all that went poorly for Florida Memorial University's women Saturday – falling into an early hole and shooting 27 percent from the field – the Lady Lions rallied back and had a chance to win, but
Danielle Bailey's potentially game-winning three-pointer missed and Florida Memorial fell 63-61 to visiting Webber International University.
Trailing 59-43 with just under six minutes left in the fourth quarter, FMU head coach
Gregory Stanback saw his team go on a 13-0 run in just over a two-minute span to climb back into the game. The Lions eventually tied the game at 61 with a minute to play after a pair of
Airneisha Gamble free throws.
Webber International regained the lead with 34 seconds left on a Leandra Franklin jumper.
Stanback called a timeout with 11 seconds left and drew up a play that freed up Bailey for an open look at a three from the left corner. Bailey's shot went long and the Warriors grabbed the errant shot and the win.
FMU (10-11, 5-6 Sun Conference), which will host Ave Maria University this coming Thursday (Jan. 30), had their two-game winning streak snapped and missed out on an opportunity to possibly move into the top four in the Sun Conference standings. Instead, the Warriors (12-9, 6-5) broke their fifth-place tie with the Lions.
Gamble led Florida Memorial in scoring Saturday. The 5-foot-5 guard played all 40 minutes and finished with a game-high 23 points to go along with four rebounds and four steals. Senior
Isis Lane recorded her fourth straight double-double, totaling 15 points and 11 boards, but it came on a 5-of-15 shooting night.
Brittney Howard added eight points and nine rebounds while Bailey recorded all four of her points from the free throw line as she was 0-for-11 from the field Saturday for FMU, which ended up shooting a 19-of-70 overall and 7-for-34 from the three-point line.
The Lions also lost the rebound and turnover battles to Webber International, which was led in scoring by Eletra Graham with 15 points.
