MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Basketball is a lot of things, but at its core, it's a "make or miss" game. Either you make shots or you miss shots. And if you do more of the latter, things typically don't go well.
Florida Memorial's men had a tough shooting night Saturday – to the tune of 30 percent overall, 25 percent from three-point range, and 55 percent from the free throw line – as it fell 80-58 to visiting Sun Conference foe Southeastern University in the FMU Wellness Center.
The Lions men's tough shooting night came on the heels of what was an even worse shooting performance by the FMU women, who made just 18 percent of the shots they took in the first game of the day's doubleheader.
Florida Memorial (4-10), which was hoping to create some momentum by building on its win over Talladega College this past Thursday, just couldn't seem to get shots to fall through the bottom of the net.
Senior
Jordan Martin finished with a team-high 14 points off the bench for the Lions. His clip of 5-for-12 from the field (4-for-10 from three-point) was the team's best mark while the next best was
Kaleb Darrett's 4-of-9 performance, which yielded 10 points.
7-foot junior
Mubashar Ali finished with just five points and four boards in 29 minutes Saturday, while
Quvondo Johnson – who registered a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double in Thursday's win – only added six points and five rebounds in 36 minutes. FMU, which will be on the road this coming Thursday to face Thomas University, finished 22-of-73 from the field and lost the rebound battle 48-32.
Contrariwise, Southeastern shot 57 percent from the field and registered 54 points in the paint – routinely getting the basket for layups and short floaters.
