Turnovers Hamper Lions, FMU Falls To Warner

LAKE WALES, Fla. – After playing a spirited first half, Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team saw its offense fade in the second half as the Lions fell to host Warner University 69-56 Thursday night in the Turner Athletic Center.

FMU (0-1, 0-1 The Sun Conference) did two things Thursday that usually never end with a positive result – commit more turnovers than the opponent and lose the rebound battle. The Lions turned the ball over 22 times – compared to Warner's 9 – and was outrebounded 34-29. The rebound discrepancy was most glaring on the offensive boards, where the Royals grabbed 14 offensive rebounds compared to FMU's 5, which allowed Warner to manufacture 15 second-chance points compared to just two for the Lions.

Also, the Royals were able to generate 26 points off of FMU's 22 turnovers.

Senior center and 2019-20 All-Sun Conference First Team selection Mubashar Ali led the way for Florida Memorial, which will host neighborhood and conference rival St. Thomas University Saturday night at 7 p.m., with 11 points. The 7-footer was the only Lions player to finish with double figure points while also securing a team-high 8 rebounds.

Quincy Urbina added 9 points, Tristan Stephens finished with 8 points (on 4-of-6 shooting), and senior Cheikh Kebe chipped in with 7 points, a block, and a steal.

The teams went back and forth early, trading baskets through the first five minutes of the game. FMU was able to take a 15-10 lead – which ended up being its largest of the game – at the 13-minute mark of the first half. The lead would seesaw through the rest of the first half before the Royals (3-0, 1-0 TSC) were able to take a 38-35 lead into halftime.

FMU continued to trade baskets and the lead with Warner through the first eight minutes of the second half and took a 47-45 lead after a Murrad Berrien breakaway layup. The Royals responded by going on an elongated 14-2 run – putting Florida Memorial in a 10-point hole with just five minutes left in the game. Warner, which was led by Rod Boggan's game-high 28 points, kept the Lions at bay the rest of the way.

All 11 FMU players that logged minutes Thursday registered points; the Lions blocked five shots; and shot a solid 17-of-22 from the free throw line as a team.
