Tolbert & Tillman Shine, Lady Lions Fall To St. Thomas Saturday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Over the course of the first 31 minutes of Saturday's game, Florida Memorial University's women's basketball team did just about everything right. The Lady Lions even opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, extending their lead to 15 points with 9:49 left to play.

However, those final nine minutes didn't go nearly as well as the first 31 had – Florida Memorial saw its lead steadily dwindle and eventually evaporate as visiting St. Thomas University went on a 19-3 run over the final five minutes of the game to hand the Lions a 83-78 defeat Saturday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

The Lady Lions actually saw its lead hit 15 twice during the fourth quarter – at the 9:49 mark after the quarter-opening Chantel Barnett three-pointer and again at 7:41 mark after a Keaynna Tolbert breakaway layup.

St. Thomas University ultimately outscored FMU 32-15 in the fourth quarter, with Anari Dozier scoring 23 of the team's points in the final 10 minutes – including a go-ahead three-pointer with 33 seconds left.

Saturday – FMU's home opener and opening salvo in the "Battle of Miami Gardens" with the rival Bobcats – marked the second straight game where Florida Memorial had a double-digit lead during the second half and saw the opposing team rally back. The Lady Lions, who will travel to face Ave Maria University on Nov. 18, saw Warner University rally back and pull within two this past Thursday, but FMU was able to stave off the Royals.

Florida Memorial (1-2, 1-1 The Sun Conference) wasn't able to stem the tide the same way against St. Thomas.

Dozier finished with 32 points to lead all scorers. While FMU had four players finish in double figures.

Tolbert led the Lions with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, with 2 steals and a block. Jamari Tillman added 18 points (4-for-7 from three-point range), Chantel Barnett had 17 points and Destiny Marin chipped in with 13 points off the bench.

It'll probably strike as a bittersweet dual-edged sword when FMU head coach Gregory Stanback looks back and sees that his team shot 53 percent from three-point range (45 percent overall from the field) and had forced St. Thomas into 13 first-half turnovers while building a 10-point halftime lead.

The Lions, who played without senior forward Anjelie Tirone and freshman guard Micah Cooper, ended up shooting 40 percent from the field Saturday but lost the rebound battle by a sizable 53-31 margin.
