Washington & Ali Lead FMU To Tough Win Over Webber

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's seniors did "senior things" Saturday night as senior guard Aubrey Washington scored a game-high 23 points and senior center Mubashar Ali snatched down a season-high 17 rebounds to propel the Lions to a hard-fought 68-65 win over visiting Webber International University.

The victory not only kept the Lions undefeated on their home floor this season, it also snapped a four-game losing streak and put them back in a solid spot in the Sun Conference standings race.

Washington broke down Webber International's defense with his ability to knock down shots in the half court – chiefly finding openings in the corners behind the three-point. The Jacksonville, Florida native knocked down 5 threes while shooting an efficient 9-of-15 from the field.

It was a Washington mid-range jumper – over a pair of outstretched Webber International defender hands – that gave the Lions a 68-63 lead with 2:22 left in the game. FMU (2-5, 2-2 The Sun Conference) was able to hold onto that lead over the course of the final 182 seconds thanks to some solid defense.

Florida Memorial could've stretched its lead during that span but missed on multiple free throws – leaving the proverbial door open for the Warriors. Trailing 68-65 with seven seconds left, Webber International did have a chance to potentially tie the game but had its final three-pointer go awry – sealing the Lions' three-point victory.

Ali was a bucket away from notching a double-double – as he finished with 8 points – but his 17 rebounds set the tone for FMU on a night where it won the rebound battle 47-38.

The Lions, who trailed Webber International 31-30 at halftime, got 13 points and 6 boards off the bench from 6-foot-8 forward Quincy Urbina and another 11 points off the bench from guard Sam Mack Jr.

Florida Memorial, which will travel to West Palm Beach, Florida this coming Tuesday to face Keiser University in a makeup game from earlier this season, opened the second half on a 10-2 run – which became an elongated 17-6 spurt as the Lions opened up a 47-37 (its largest) lead with just under 15 minutes to play in the second half.

FMU held Webber International (5-6, 2-3), which had a three-game winning streak snapped by the Lions Saturday, to a dreadful 3-for-18 from the three-point line while limiting the Warriors to just 36 percent from the field.
