FMU Falters & Falls At Coastal Georgia Saturday

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – In what could be described as a bit of cruel irony, Florida Memorial saw its 2-0 set lead evaporate as host College of Coastal Georgia rallied back to take down the Lions 3-2 (26-24, 25-13, 23-25, 22-25, 12-15) in a thrilling five-set match in CCGA's Howard Coffin Gymnasium.

It was this past November that FMU rallied back from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat the Mariners in the championship match of the 2019 Sun Conference tournament – winning the Lions their first-ever Sun Conference title.

While Saturday's match had much lower stakes, it was just as intense – living up to its Sun Conference "Game of the Week" billing.

Having narrowly edged Florida Memorial in the previous two sets, Coastal Georgia took the decisive fifth set by scoring the final four points after the teams had played to a 11-all-tie.

For the third straight match, Florida Memorial was led by sophomore Biancaliz Cruz. Cruz finished with a team-high 14 kills, added three service aces and four digs while accounting for a team-best 17.5 points. Sammyra Albarran added 10 kills and eight digs and, at one point, went hit for hit with Coastal Georgia's top hitter Giovana Larregui Lopez.

Lopez finished with a game-high 22 kills, five service aces, and 15 digs.

The first set was a good indicator of how the match would go. Florida Memorial, which will host preseason No. 1 Keiser University this coming Wednesday (Sept. 30), started fast – opening up as large as a 16-5 lead on the Mariners. That lead grew to 20-10 before Coastal Georgia went on a 11-2 run to pull within one and then tied the set at 24. FMU would score the next two points – a kill followed by a service ace by Albarran for the decisive point – to secure the win.

Florida Memorial (3-3, 3-3 Sun Conference) completely dominated the second set, earning a wire-to-wire 25-13 win.

The next three sets would be hotly contested, back-and-forth battles.

Each team held four-point leads at one point during the third set, but saw the other rally back before the Mariners took a 25-23 win. The fourth set was even closer, with neither team holding a lead larger than two up until Florida Memorial saw its 22-20 lead fade thanks to a pair of disputed calls that aided CCGA's 5-0 spurt to take the fourth set 25-22.
