Lions Fight, But Fall To Keiser University Thursday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Basketball is a game runs.

And while Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team had its share of runs, visiting Keiser University had a few more as the Lions fell 77-73 Thursday night in the FMU Wellness Center.

After FMU took a 41-38 lead into halftime and stretched it out to five during the opening minutes of the second half, the teams played even for a three-minute stretch before the Seahawks went on a run of their own – taking a six-point lead (61-56) lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the game.

Florida Memorial (4-8, 4-5 The Sun Conference) made another quick run to pull within one of Keiser minutes later, but Lions could never get over the proverbial hump to retake the lead. The Seahawks stayed on top – even opening a nine-point lead with just over four minutes to play – but the Lions kept trying to chip away at its deficit.

FMU cut Keiser lead down to 73-71 with 1:37 left after Mubashar Ali shielded off multiple defenders to put in a layup around the rim. But the Seahawks came down the floor on the ensuing possession and sank a three-pointer, giving them a 76-71 lead and essentially staving off the Lions for good.

For the second straight game, Florida Memorial was led in scoring by senior guard Sam Mack Jr. The Chicago, Illinois native tied for the game-high with 25 points (on 10-of-22 shooting) while also adding 4 assists and 2 steals.

Lions head coach Ansar Al-Ameen got some much-needed scoring punch from his backcourt as senior guard Aubrey Washington knocked down four three-pointers off the bench to finish with 14 points and junior guard Terence Clayton turned in one of his best overall performances of the season – totaling 12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and just 1 turnover.

The Lions, who will travel to face St. Thomas University this coming Tuesday (Jan. 19), needed that boost from their guards since their main front court duo was hampered by foul trouble throughout the game. Ali played just 22 minutes and finished with 6 points (on a perfect 3-for-3 from the field) and 7 rebounds while Cheikh Kebe had 8 points and 8 boards in his 19 minutes on the floor – making the case that FMU could've been much better off had their 6-foot-9 forward (Kebe) and 7-foot center (Ali) been able to play extended minutes against the Seahawks 6-foot-7 center.
