Shorthanded Lady Lions Fall At St. Thomas Tuesday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's women's basketball team found itself in all-too familiar situation Tuesday.

The Lady Lions essentially dominated St. Thomas University throughout the first three quarters of the game and the early part of the fourth – even opening a double-digit lead in the final quarter in their first meeting this season back in November.

St. Thomas would rally back from the large deficit and defeat the Lions on their home floor.

Unfortunately, it happened again Tuesday.

FMU saw its 14-point fourth-quarter lead slowly dwindle and completely evaporate as St. Thomas University outscored the Lions 28-9 over the final eight minutes of the game – including an 8-1 run to end the game – to hand the Lions a 77-72 loss Tuesday night in STU's Fernandez Family Center.

The Lady Lions, who will travel to face Keiser University this coming Thursday (Jan. 21), held a 63-49 lead with just over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter after a Chantel Barnett layup. The rim seemed to close up on Florida Memorial (6-6, 6-5 The Sun Conference) after that, as it went just 3-for-15 from the field over the course of the final eight minutes.

FMU junior guard and Sun Conference leading scorer Keaynna Tolbert led all scorers with a game-high 24 points. While her shooting percentage from the field wasn't as efficient as she would've liked it to be (6-of-21), Tolbert was able to knock down 9 of her 11 free throws – setting a new personal season-high for free throws made in a single game.

Aside from Tolbert, who maintained her conference-best 22 point-per-game average with her performance Tuesday, the Lions got a double-double from Heather Durand – as she finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. FMU freshman Chantel Barnett scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game – seventh time this season – as she totaled 15 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

While Durand's performance helped to buoy Florida Memorial, playing without the services of its second-leading scorer in junior guard Jamari Tillman was unfavorable. Tillman missed the game for an undisclosed reason and her status moving forward is unclear.

After Barnett, FMU's next highest point total came from Destiny Marin – who made her return to the Lions' lineup after missing the previous game for an undisclosed reason – with 7 points.

Turnovers also hampered FMU head coach Gregory Stanback's team, as the Lions committed 23 turnovers that led to 20 points for St. Thomas University – which had four players finish with double-figure points, led by Brooke Bogatz's 21.
