FMU Can’t Overcome Ave Maria’s Hot Shooting, Falls Saturday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The most simplistic explanation of basketball is putting the ball through the basket, and Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team just didn't do that as well as its opponent Saturday, as the Lions fell to visiting Ave Maria University 76-65.

FMU shot 40 percent from the field – not a horrible clip – but was just 4-of-21 (19 percent) from three-point range while the Gyrenes shot 51 percent from the field overall and 50 percent from three-point range.

Even with its tough shooting night, Florida Memorial (5-10, 5-8 The Sun Conference) trailed by just one point (60-59) with just over four minutes left in the game after Murrad Berrien made one of the team's four three-pointers on the night. Ave Maria answered the Lions' three-pointer with three of their own on the ensuing three trips down court – pushing its lead out to 10 (69-59) and essentially sinking FMU's hopes of rallying back.

FMU, which will host Warner University this coming Tuesday (Jan. 26) in a makeup game from earlier this season, was led in scoring by senior Italo Ciccotti's 15 points. The San Paolo, Brazil native set new season-highs in points, rebounds (7), and minutes played (33) Saturday.

Senior Mubashar Ali recorded his eighth double-double – third consecutive – finishing with 14 points and 13 boards. Sam Mack Jr. also finished with double-digit points for the Lions, totaling 10 in just 14 minutes of action. Typically one of FMU's leading scorers, Mack played limited minutes Saturday.

Cheikh Kebe chipped in 8 points and 8 rebounds while Berrien finished with 7 points and a team-high 3 steals for FMU head coach Ansar Al-Ameen's team.

Ave Maria (13-7, 7-4) had three players finish with at least 16 points, led by Eric Klekas' 22 points.
