Lions’ Second Half Rally Falls Just Short At Webber Thursday

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team fought back and cut a 26-point second-half deficit down to just three with just over a minute to play but couldn't rally all the way back as the Lions fell 72-64 to host Webber International University Thursday night in the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

FMU chipped away its deficit throughout the second half, but truly clawed its way back into the game with a 00-0 run that brought it within 66-63 after a Mubashar Ali layup with 1:07 left on the clock.

Three would be as close as the Lions would get, however, as time was as much of an opponent as Webber International was down the stretch. FMU would only score one more point – an Ali free throw – while the Warriors were able to tack onto their lead with six consecutive made free throws as Florida Memorial committed fouls to stop the clock, pushing the final margin to 72-64.

For the second straight game, Ali led FMU in scoring with 25 points. The 7-foot center was 9-of-15 from the field while totaling 9 rebounds in 32 minutes of action.

Terence Clayton gave the Lions, who will host Southeastern University this coming Saturday (Jan. 30), a bit of scoring boost from the backcourt – as he finished with 11 points and Andrew Drugan recorded his season-high point total (9) and rebound total (6) Thursday.

Florida's Memorial's overall shooting woes – unfortunately – continued Thursday. The Lions, who came into the game against the Warriors having shot an average of 43 percent from the field and 28 percent from three-point range in its previous three games, didn't fare any better Thursday – shooting 35 percent from the field and 23 percent from the beyond the arc as they fell into a 45-19 hole at halftime.

Florida Memorial was a bit shorthanded Thursday. Italo Ciccotti missed the game with a lower extremity injury he sustained in the Lions' loss to Warner University this past Tuesday and Muhammad Gilchrist missed his second-straight game with an upper extremity injury. FMU head coach Ansar Al-Ameen even called up freshman guard Christopher Gonzalez from the developmental/JV team to help fill out the roster.

Cheikh Kebe finished with a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with 8 points, 3 assists and 2 blocks. Ebenezer Aboagye added 8 boards and team-high 3 steals, but the Lions lost the overall rebound battle 46-44 and finished minus-3 in the turnover margin (15-12).
