Tolbert Has Big Night, Shorthanded FMU Falls To Webber International

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Florida Memorial University junior Keaynna Tolbert led all scorers with 28 points but it wasn't enough as the shorthanded Lady Lions couldn't overcome a 19-point third quarter deficit and eventually fell 68-55 to host Webber International University Thursday night in the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

FMU, which will host Southeastern University this coming Saturday (Jan. 30), had just seven players available Thursday night – as Micah Cooper, Janae Markes, and team second-leading scorer Jamari Tillman all missed their second straight game due to injury.

Tolbert, the leading scorer in the Sun Conference, played 36 minutes, made 11 of her 21 shots from the field, and grabbed 7 rebounds; but committed a game-high 9 turnovers. While Tolbert finished with an above-50 percent shooting clip, the rest of the Lions didn't fare as well. As a whole, Florida Memorial shot just 31 percent from the field (18-of-58) and a season-low 6 percent from three-point range (1-for-15).

While the Warriors didn't shoot that much better than the Lions Thursday – 39 percent from the field and 26 percent from three-point range - it didn't help that Florida Memorial turned the ball over 20 times Thursday – leading to 21 Webber International points. Conversely, WIU turned the ball over just seven times.

Junior Unique Tate sank FMU's lone shot from beyond the arc, helping push her point total to 10 and giving the Lady Lions (7-8, 7-7 The Sun Conference) their only other double figure point scorer on the night.

Heather Durand, who logged s full 40 minutes on the court Thursday night, did add 6 points and 10 rebounds while senior Anjelie Tirone finished with 13 boards and 4 points for the Lions, who trailed be a single point at the end of the first quarter but saw that deficit grow to 11 by halftime and 19 midway through the third quarter.

Webber International (13-4, 9-3) had three players finish with double-digit point totals – led by Amaya Small's 18 – and three more players record at least six points.
