FMU Falters On Home Floor, Falls To Thomas University

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – In spite of Mubashar Ali's 18-point, 12-rebound double-double – his fifth of the season – and having four players score in double figures overall, Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team dropped its first game on its home floor this season in a 78-70 loss to visiting Thomas University.

The Lions, who will host College of Coastal Georgia this coming Saturday (Jan. 9), had won its previous two games on the FMU Wellness Center floor, but didn't seem to have the requisite energy needed to match that of a Night Hawks team that led FMU by six at halftime and held as large as a 17-point lead over the Lions late in the second half.

Florida Memorial (3-7, 3-4 The Sun Conference) did make a bit of a rally over the final four minutes – cutting into that 17-point deficit with an 11-3 run – but Thomas University sprinkled a couple of made free throws on its lead and the clock ran out with the Lions trailing 78-70.

Ali's double-double came on an efficient 7-of-10 from the field as he totaled the game's highest point total. Senior Cheikh Kebe added 12 points and 9 rebounds off the bench for FMU while Muhammad Gilchrist and Sam Mack finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Terence Clayton chipped in with 7 points and 3 rebounds and senior guard Aubrey Washington finished with 6 points and 3 assists.

Inopportunely, a trend has begun to follow the Lions. For the third time this season, FMU shot a better percentage from the field than its opponent (43 percent to 41 percent Thursday) and won the rebound battle (out-boarding the Night Hawks 43-34) but had those positives canceled out by committing 20 turnovers.

Florida Memorial's turnovers became 24 points for Thomas University (3-9, 3-3). The Night Hawks totaled 13 steals Thursday, led by Jordan Booker's 9 as the 5-foot-8 guard also finished with 14 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds.
