FMU Keeps Fire In Check, Ties Southeastern Saturday

HIALEAH, Fla. – A win is a win, and a loss is a loss. And a tie is just a maddening outcome – especially when a victory was clearly in sight.

After holding onto a 3-2 lead following a 72nd minute goal, Florida Memorial University saw Southeastern University tie the game with less than five minutes to play in regulation then played two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods before settling for a 3-3 tie with the visiting Fire Saturday afternoon at Goodlet Park in Hialeah, Florida.

Each overtime period was played with the "golden goal", meaning if either team had scored it would have ended the game, instead the teams remained deadlocked as fatigue seemed to set in under the hot South Florida sun.

Victory was right in the paws of the Lions, who played Saturday's home match at the community park in Hialeah opposed to their home field of Dr. Lester Brown Park in Miami Gardens, Florida because it could not accommodate FMU's women's-men's doubleheader, after Johan Godoy's late-game goal.

The junior midfielder got loose and was able to get his foot on a ball in the box and sent it into the back of the net – putting Florida Memorial University up 3-2 over Southeastern with less than 20 minutes to play. Florida Memorial clung to the slim lead for a full 15 minutes before the Fire was able to find a small crack in the Lions' defense and tie the game on a Skylar Funk goal.

Saturday's match had an eventful first half, with both teams scoring alternating goals within minutes of each other.

SEU, which was receiving votes in the last NAIA National Soccer Poll, got on the board first in the 15th minute before Godoy knotted the game at one with a successful penalty kick in the 26th minute. The Fire retook the lead (2-1) in 42nd minute before Artur Barros got his foot on a pass from Quavon White and kicked in a hard shot past the Southeastern goalkeeper.

Godoy's two-goal day brought his team-high total to five goals on the season. He also led the team with six total shots (five on goal) Saturday. Barros' one shot ended up being his first-half goal while Michael Del Gaudio had two shots (one on goal).

Florida Memorial (1-4-1, 1-0-1 The Sun Conference) goalkeeper Jesus Tovar also had an impressive day Saturday, notching a season-high 17 saves against the Fire – who took 27 total shots (20 on goal).

Looking ahead, the Lions will have nearly a full week to rest and prepare before hitting the road to take on Webber International University on October 9th for a 11:30 a.m. match.
