Lions MSOC Thwarted By Thomas University Saturday

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Missing two starters – including its starting goalkeeper – did Florida Memorial University zero favors as it was tripped up on its quest for a postseason tournament berth in a 3-1 loss to Thomas University Saturday at the TU Soccer Complex.

The Lions had just put themselves in prime position to potentially earn a spot in The Sun Conference postseason tournament this past Wednesday as they jumped up from the eighth spot to the final qualifying No. 6 spot with its win over Savannah College of Art and Design. Auspiciously enough, Florida Memorial was able to maintain the six-seed in the TSC standings despite the loss to Thomas Saturday because No. 7 Ave Maria University and No. 8 SCAD both also loss Saturday.

Thomas University, which was sitting in the No. 9 spot, stayed in conference's basement in spite of its upset of the Lions.

FMU (2-7-1, 2-4-1 The Sun Conference) played Saturday's game without starting center back Maximilian Dreger and goalie Jesus Tovar. Dreger's absence was expected as he is still recovering from an upper extremity injury he sustained after a vicious collision with the SCAD goalkeeper this past Wednesday. Lions head coach Daniel Radice was hoping to have Tovar back in the lineup, but he was unable to rejoin the team in Georgia following his excused absence (personal reasons) from the team.

Ian Maldonado, a converted center back, played in Tovar's stead between the posts and performed admirably for a freshman making his first start as a goalkeeper – recording 7 saves.

The Nighthawks (5-8-1, 1-5-1) got on the board first with a goal in the 13th minute, but Florida Memorial was able to knot the game at one just before halftime on a Johan Godoy goal – as he got his foot on a Michael Del Gaudio pass and beat the Thomas goalie one-on-one with a strong kick into the corner of the net.

TU was the more aggressive team in the second half, evident by it outshooting the Lions 14-6, and the Night Hawks pulled away from FMU late in the second half with a pair of goals within a minute of each other – the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute and an "insurance goal" in the 78th.

Godoy led Florida Memorial with 5 total shots (2 on goal) Saturday. Del Gaudio, who recorded a hat trick against SCAD, had 1 shot and an assist while Edward Moore, Carlos Nieto, Nicholas Martinez, and Luis Constantini all were credited with 1 shot.

FMU will have a few extra days to rest before it plays its regular season finale and honors its seniors this coming Saturday (October 30) when it hosts Warner University at Dr. Lester Brown Park at 12 noon.
