FMU WBB Topped By Rust College In Tournament Finale

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Florida Memorial University's Monique Esbrand led all scorers with 19 points and snatched down a game-high 8 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Lions were topped 78-46 Sunday afternoon in the Hawkins Student Activity Center during the Dream Classic Academy Invitational at Talladega College.
 
Sunday's game was the second in as many days for FMU – as it opened up the tournament's action Saturday with a tilt against Stillman College.
 
Fatigue coupled with going up against a quality opponent like Rust was a tough combination to overcome for Florida Memorial head coach Gregory Stanback's team.
 
After Esbrand, no other Lions player finished with a double-digit point total. Hanifa Neal was the closest with 8 points in 35 minutes of action. The rest of the roster had 5 points or less. It also didn't help that three FMU players – Chantel Barnett, Danielle Jackson, and Quameerah Peterson-Gray – fouled out Sunday.
 
Florida Memorial, which will have more than a week off before it plays its home opener against Louisiana State University-Shreveport on November 4th, also only had two assists compared to 18 turnovers.
 
The Lions (0-2) shot 34.5 percent overall from the field and just 22 percent (2-for-9) from three-point range and were outscored by the Bearcats in every quarter – including falling into a 21-13 hole by the end of the first quarter that became a 16-point deficit by halftime.
 
Rust's depth really pressed down on FMU in the second half. 11 different Bearcats players recorded points with three finishing with 10 or more points.
