Benton Leads Lions MBB To 93-89 Overtime Win Over Rival St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Senior guard Corey Benton scored a game-high 29 points, including going a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line, leading five different Florida Memorial University players to finish with double-digit points Saturday as the Lions earned a 93-88 overtime win over host St. Thomas University in STU's Fernandez Family Center.

It was Benton that knocked down a pair of free throws over the final 25 seconds in regulation that tied the game at 77 and it was 7-foot-2 Nicodemo Majuec's block at the buzzer that kept the game knotted and forced the extra period. FMU forward Brent Holcombe had his fingerprints all over the overtime period, as he knocked down two critical threes – the second of which giving the Lions a 91-86 lead with 56 seconds left to play.

St. Thomas made a pair of free throws to cut FMU's lead down to three; Jacobi Gordon missed two free throws and left the door open for the Bobcats with 27 seconds left; STU turned the ball over on what ended up being its final offensive possession; and the Benton put the game on ice with his 11th and 12th made free throws of the night to give the Lions their final 93-88 margin.

Benton scored his season-high point total Saturday coming off the bench for the Lions. He ended up shooting 7-of-20 from the field and 3-for-8 from three-point range while grabbing 6 rebounds, dishing out 5 assists, and nabbing away 4 steals.

Holcombe also had one of his best performances up to this point in the season, recording his first double-double in a FMU uniform – scoring 22 points and bringing down 13 rebounds in a game-high 41 minutes of action.

Florida Memorial (3-2, 1-0 The Sun Conference), which led by two at halftime and as many as nine with just over seven minutes to play in the second half, earned its first Sun Conference win of the season Saturday and extended its current winning streak over rival St. Thomas to four consecutive wins spanning back to the 2020-21 season. The Lions swept all the regular season meetings with the Bobcats (2-1, 0-1) last season for the first time in program history and is currently on its longest winning streak against STU in program history.

Aside from Holcombe and Benton, Florida Memorial got 10 points from each of Gordon, Gary Adams, and Carington Campbell. Campbell, who played the role of hero in FMU's home-opener back in October with a game-winning three-pointer, knocked down a crucial three in overtime Saturday.

Adams added 5 boards and 3 steals before he fouled out of the game while Gordon chipped in with 6 rebounds and 2 steals to go along with his 10 points.

The Lions will have to keep their celebration of the win against the Bobcats to rather brief as they will return to action Monday (Nov. 15) when they take a short road trip north to West Palm Beach, Florida to take on NCAA Division-II program Lynn University for a 7 p.m. tilt.
