Mimms & Young Named All-Mid-South Conference Selections

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's historic 2021 football season was further bolstered this week as it learned that it received its first-ever All-Mid-South Conference Sun Division selections following the release of the conference's superlative teams Thursday.

Freshman linebacker Joshua Mimms became FMU's first First-Team honoree while freshman running back George Young earned Second Team honors.

The 2021 All Mid-South Conference Sun Division teams and individual award winners were announced by conference officials on Thursday. Pioneer College Caterers is the official sponsor of the 2021 Mid-South Conference football awards. Keiser University's Marques Burgess is the Craig Mullins MSC Sun Offensive Player of the Year and Southeastern University's Marc Viechec is the MSC Sun Defensive Player of the Year.

The individual awards and all-conference teams are selected by a vote of the Sun Division's coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players.

In addition to the players of the year, Ave Maria University's Joshua Jenkins is the Offensive Freshman of the Year, Southeastern's Joey Chatman is the Defensive Freshman of the Year. Southeastern's Cesar Rivas-Sandoval is the 2021 Ron Finley Sun Division Coach of the Year and SEU's Adam Waugh is the Sun Division Assistant Coach of the Year.

Mimms earned his spot on the First Team by leading Florida Memorial in total tackles this season with 79 (44 solo and 35 assisted). The Fort Pierce, Florida native also registered 7 tackles-for-loss along with an interception, a pass breakup, and a forced fumbled.

The freshman, who appeared in all 11 games this season, had two games with 10 or more total tackles, including a 10-tackle day in Florida Memorial's 41-17 win over Union College (Ky.).

Young's name was already etched into the Florida Memorial modern-era football record books for some of his single-game and full season performances this year, now the Miami, Florida native can add his MSC Second Team All-Conference honor to his legacy.

In 10 games this season, Young racked up a team-best 833 rushing yards and 5 rushing touchdowns while averaging 4.8 yards-per-carry. He also set the modern-era marks for most rushing yards in a single game (146) and total scrimmage yards (154).

Florida Memorial University head football coach Tim "Ice" Harris Sr. said Mimms and Young were well-deserving of their all-conference honors.

"Both of those guys did a great job for us this season…they were consistent in what they brought to program each week," Harris said. "They both worked hard, overcame things along the way, and strived to set the standard that we're trying to put in place here at Florida Memorial. I am very happy for them and extremely proud of them."
