Tough Shooting Night Hurts Florida Memorial MBB, Lions Lose At Faulkner Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Florida Memorial University shot 36 percent from the field Saturday – not an egregiously horrible percentage – but host Faulkner University made more than half of its shots (53 percent) and that was too much for the Lions to overcome as they fell 75-64 to the host Eagles in the nightcap finale of the Jimmy Faulkner Classic at Tine Davis Gymnasium.

The Lions, who led Faulkner by one (34-33) at halftime, saw its shooting percent take a dive in the second half – going just 5-of-15 from the field and 3-of-11 from three-point range as FMU's slight lead quickly evaporated and they never got closer than five throughout the second half as the Eagles kept Florida Memorial at bay while settling into the final 11-point margin.

Brent Holcombe led Florida Memorial (2-2) with a game-high 25 points and 9 rebounds Saturday. The Miami, Florida native also recorded a block and a steal while going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Corey Benton was the only other Lions player to finish with a double-digit point total against Faulkner, as he totaled 14 points. Benton's impact was stunted through, as he fouled after just 27 minutes of action.

The Lions bench couldn't recreate the big production it had in Friday's game against Middle Georgie State University, when the reserves contributed 34 total points, instead FMU head coach Ansar Al-Ameen's bench only chipped in 17 points – 8 of which coming from senior forward Cheikh Kebe.

Conversely, Faulkner (2-0) had four players finish with 11 points or more, led by C.J. Hines' 24 points and Austin Rogers' 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Florida Memorial's schedule won't do the team any favors, as the Lions will continue its extended road stint this coming Tuesday (Nov. 9) when they travel to Deland, Florida to play an exhibition against NCAA Division-I opponent Stetson University.
