FMU MBB Clamps Down On Coastal Georgia In Second Half, Wins 79-68

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Senior guard Corey Benton recorded a double-double for the second-straight game and Florida Memorial University had a strong defensive second half to power a 79-68 home victory over College of Coastal Georgia Saturday night in the FMU Wellness Center.
 
How It Happened
  • After holding a slim three-point lead at halftime and seeing the Mariners tie the game at 42 a minute into the second half, FMU went on a 12-2 run to take a 54-44 lead with 13:46 left in the game.
  • Coastal Georgia had a couple of small spurts, drawing with five points twice – the latest being 58-53 at the 9:22 mark.
  • Florida Memorial pulled away again with a quick 7-1 run sparked by Jacobi Gordon, who had a tough layup in the lane and a pair of free throws in the quick stretch.
  • The Lions opened as large as a 14-point lead (75-61) in the second half before settling into the final 79-68 margin.
  • Benton secured back-to-back doubles, scoring a team-high 22 points and grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds.
  • FMU turned up its defensive pressure in the second half; especially putting clamps on CCGA guard Kenny Brown, who had 22 points in the first half but finished with just 2 points after halftime.
  • The Mariners scored just 29 points in the second half while Florida Memorial notched 37.
  • Florida Memorial held CCGA to just 34 percent shooting in the half.

  • In addition to leading the team in points and rebounds, Benton also tied with Eric Hester for the game-high assist total with 6.
  • Three other Lions scored in double figures Saturday; Hester with 11, Gordon with 11, and Cheikh Kebe with 10.
  • Hester also finished with 9 rebounds.
  • Florida Memorial shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) from the field and 72.2 percent (13-for-18) from the free throw line but just 19 percent (4-for-21) from three-point range.
  • Coastal Georgia out-rebounded FMU 37-44.

Analysis & Notes
  • Florida Memorial finished with a season-low number of turnovers.
  • The Lions' players registering 6-foot-7 or taller were only credited with nine total rebounds while 6-foot-3 Hester and 6-foot-2 Benton recorded 9 and 10 boards respectively.
  • FMU senior center Mubashar Ali returned to the lineup after missing Thursday's game against Thomas University and played 10 minutes off the bench, scoring 4 points.
  • Florida Memorial was without the services of junior guard Anfernee King, who missed the game with a non-COVID illness.
  • The Lions remain undefeated on the Wellness Center floor – winning their fourth straight game at home.
  • FMU improves to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in Sun Conference play.
  • Coastal Georgia falls to 4-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
