Lions WBB Gets Strong Game From Barnett, Holds Off Coastal Georgia Saturday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Sophomore Chantel Barnett lead all scorers with 26 points and Florida Memorial University was able to stave off a pesky College of Coastal Georgia team, picking up a 76-69 victory Saturday afternoon in the FMU Wellness Center.
 
How It Happened
  • After opening what would be their largest lead of the game – 17 points – with 3:27 left in the second quarter, the Lions saw Coastal Georgia finish the first half on a 12-0 run.
  • CCGA continued to chip away at FMU's lead, outscoring the Lions 22-19 in the third quarter.
  • The Mariners' momentum reached its peak early in the fourth quarter when they took a one-point (63-62) lead on Florida Memorial after a Jordan Joyce three-pointer.
  • FMU regained the lead on an Aliyah-Deen Ahmad three-pointer on the ensuing possession.
  • The teams knotted at 65 after a pair of CCGA free throws.
  • Lions freshman center Da'Marreya Johnson put her team ahead with a short turnaround jumper in the lane with 5:52 left to play.
  • Florida Memorial held onto that lead over the final minutes; getting crucial buckets from Natalia Leguizamon, Keaynna Tolbert, and late free throws by Barnett.
  • Barnett set the tone early, scoring 14 points in the first quarter as the Lions jumped out to a 24-15 lead after one.
  • Coastal Georgia leading scorer Kaliyah Little picked up three fouls in the first quarter and had to sit out the entire second quarter.
