Lions Come Out Flat, Fall To Thomas University Saturday

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Florida Memorial University's men's basketball team dug itself an early hole and could never climb its way back out as it fell 79-56 to host Thomas University Saturday afternoon.

The teams were knotted at eight with just under 16 minutes left in the first half, then the Night Hawks went on a 19-0 run – blowing open the game and leaving the Lions to play catch-up the rest of the way. FMU trailed by 21 points at halftime and fell behind by as many as 27 points in the second half before shaving off a few points late to settle into the still-lopsided final.

Florida Memorial (6-16, 6-13 The Sun Conference) never got closer than 17 points in the second half.

While Saturday's loss is the team's fourth straight, FMU remains inside the Sun Conference postseason picture. The Lions are still clinging to the No. 7 spot ahead of Southeastern University and Webber International University, but now hold just a half-game lead over both in terms of conference record, making FMU's upcoming Feb. 20th home meeting with rival St. Thomas University an even more important game.

Two Lions finished with double-doubles – 7-foot-2 freshman center Nicodemo Majuec had 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds and 6-foot-10 graduate senior Jethro Tshisumpa totaled 10 points and 11 boards Saturday.

7-foot senior center Mubashar Ali had his streak of consecutive games scoring in double digits snapped at nine and his streak of consecutive games grabbing at least 10 rebounds halted at four, as he totaled just 7 points and 4 rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

Terence Clayton and Murrad Berrien each contributed 8 points for FMU while freshman guard Christopher Gonzalez played a season-high 30 minutes and finished with 3 points, a rebound, and a steal.

Optimistically, turnovers weren't as big of an issue Saturday as they had been for the Lions recently. Florida Memorial had at least 20 turnovers in its previous three games but only committed 13 against the Night Hawks Saturday. The scourge of poor shooting still hurt the Lions, though. FMU shot just 23-of-69 (33 percent) from the field and 5-of-28 (18 percent) from three-point range Saturday – marking the ninth time this season the team has shot below 25 percent from long range.
