Lions Fall To USC-Beaufort In Strong Pitching Duel Saturday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A pitcher's duel can make for dramatic baseball, but it can also make for a frustrating day when coming out on the short end – which is what happened to Florida Memorial University's baseball team Saturday as it missed on a few opportunities and fell 4-2 to visiting University of South Carolina-Beaufort on Harry T. Moore Field.

In what was the "rubber match" between the Sun Conference foes, as the team's split Friday's doubleheader, it was the Sand Sharks that took the three-game set by edging out the Lions Saturday.

After five scoreless innings, 1-run innings for both teams in the sixth, and a scoreless seventh inning, the Lions were the ones to blink first as USC-Beaufort was able to build some momentum at the plate. The Sand Sharks got a single from Marino Sorbara, then had another player get on base thanks to an FMU error – which allowed Sorbara to advance to third. USC-Beaufort brought two home on single through the left side.

The Lions tried to get a rally going in the bottom of the eighth, opening their at-bats with a Jose Santana double. Yunior Sanchez moved Santana over with a grounder down the left line and Jalen Young brought him home with a dinger up the middle – cutting the deficit to 3-2 headed to the ninth inning.

USCB was able to manufacture a run in the top of the ninth – as Lions head coach Florentino Burgos replaced Hernandez on the mound with Julio Creazzola – and took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

FMU (3-3, 1-2 The Sun Conference) couldn't get a rally started in the ninth as Sand Sharks closer Eamonn Collins got two Lions batters to fly out and struck out pinch hitter Zachary Urso.

Despite the loss Florida Memorial, which will have a few days off before it hosts Ave Maria University for three-game weekend series beginning Feb. 19, saw starting pitcher Juan Hernandez carry a no-hitter to the eighth inning. Hernandez kept the USC-Beaufort batters quiet early with an array of pitches, getting them to poor contact and relying on his defense behind him to secure the put outs.

Hernandez pitched 8 innings with 6 strikeouts and gave up 2 hits.

USC-Beaufort only totaled 4 hits Saturday, compared to 8 for the Lions. Jacquel Perry and Manuel Mollinedo each had two hits for FMU, both going 2-for-4. Young and Sanchez each had RBI's while Rohandry Javier and Santana scored runs.
