FMU Men Topple Webber International 2-1 Thursday

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Florida Memorial University's men's soccer team elected to resume play on its 2020 fall season this spring and opened play with a 2-1 victory over host Webber International University Thursday afternoon.
 
The Lions' men's team canceled its season back in October for health and safety reason amid COVID-19 concerns but has elected to take advantage of the NAIA's decision to allow fall sports to that previously canceled to resume action this spring. Florida Memorial will ultimately play five games through February and into March. The matches will still count towards the 2020 season records and statistics, but none will count towards the team's conference record – even if it plays against a conference opponent.
 
Florida Memorial (1-4) took the victory Thursday with a pair of second-half goals. After falling behind 1-0 in the 26th minute, Lavaughn McKay tied the game with a hard low shot past the Webber International goalie in the 76th minute.
 
Tajay Russell gave the Lions the lead in the 86th minute when he got control of a pass, drove into the box, and was able to get off a shot that found the bottom right corner of the net.
 
Goalkeeper Jesus Tovar racked up 5 saves on the six Warriors shots on goal.  Russell and McKay each scored on their only shots on goal while Johan Godoy led all players with 5 shots and 2 shots on goal.
 
FMU is scheduled to travel to St. Thomas University on February 20th for a 6 p.m. match on STU's Soccer Field.
