Lady Lions Upend St. Thomas, Earn Win On Senior Day

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Four different Florida Memorial University players scored in double figures, led by Keaynna Tolbert's game-high 18 points, and the Lady Lions made sure not to let its double-digit fourth quarter lead slip away as it picked up a 60-53 win over visiting St. Thomas University Saturday in front of a limited number of fans in the FMU Wellness Center.

In the previous two meetings against the Bobcats, FMU held double-digit leads but saw them dwindle and ultimately evaporate as St. Thomas rallied back to win both games. Saturday, Florida Memorial took a 7-point lead into the fourth quarter and saw it grow to as large as 14 with just over three minutes to play. Though STU closed the game on an 11-4 run, FMU had enough of a cushion and took care of the ball enough late to secure the win in its regular season finale.

Saturday's win meant a lot to the Lions on multiple fronts. Sentimentally, it meant that senior Anjelie Tirone would walk off the FMU Wellness Center floor victorious in her final regular season game. Florida Memorial head coach Gregory Stanback, his coaching staff, and Tirone's teammates honored the Orlando, Florida native before the game with flowers, hand-made signs, and a commemorative framed poster to honor her four-year career with the Lions.

Tirone made sure to make her last regular season home game a memorable one, as she finished with a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double in 34 minutes.

Knocking off the Bobcats (17-4, 14-4) also cemented a 10-win season for FMU (10-10, 10-9 The Sun Conference). Saturday's victory had no bearing on the seeding for the Lions, who had already clinched their spot in the TSC postseason tourney, it only affirmed their spot as the No. 6 team and set up their first-round matchup at No. 3 seed Webber International this coming Tuesday (Feb. 23).

Tolbert made her return to the Lions' lineup Saturday after missing the previous two games with an upper extremity injury. The leading scorer in the Sun Conference and national top-10 scorer added 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals to go with her 18 points Saturday.

Destiny Marin was also back in the lineup for FMU Saturday. Marin, who missed time with an upper extremity injury, saw limited action (7 minutes) but provided the Lions backcourt depth.

Heather Durand had 16 points and 7 boards for Florida Memorial while freshman Chantel Barnett chipped in with 12 points, both finishing with higher point totals than STU's leading scorer Kayla Rodriguez's 10 points.
