FMU Drops Two Saturday, Loses Series To Warner University

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – After knocking off visiting Warner University in Friday's weekend series-opener, Florida Memorial University couldn't find the same mojo Saturday as it dropped both games in the day's doubleheader and ultimately the weekend series to the Royals.

Saturday's first game was a high-scoring affair that included six lead changes, unfortunately the Lions were on the wrong end of the final one in a 14-13 marathon game. The second game was lower scoring battle, but Warner University took advantage of FMU's pitching struggles to deal the Lions an 11-5 defeat.

Florida Memorial (13-20, 6-15 The Sun Conference) clung to a 13-12 lead in the bottom of the sixth after Zachary Urso belted a hanging pitching over the left field fence for a solo home run. After the teams played though a scoreless seventh inning, Warner University strung together three hits and a walk that resulted in the Royals plating two runs and taking a 14-13 lead in the top of the eighth.

The Lions couldn't get any momentum going with their final six outs and had to settle for the one-run loss.

Three different FMU batters recorded multiple hits – Rohandry Javier, Manuel Mollinedo, and Jalen Young. Javier went 2-for-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Mollinedo was also 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored while Young went 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI, and 2 walks drawn.

Yunior Sanchez went 1-for-2 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, and 3 walks drawn. Urso's home run – his first of the season – was his lone hit in the first game Saturday as Florida Memorial University recorded at least six hits for the 16th consecutive game.

FMU Drops Game Two As Warner University's Bats Heat Up
With the series win hanging in the balance, Florida Memorial saw its 4-3 fourth-inning lead evaporate as Warner University hit three home runs over the final five innings to take down the Lions 11-5.

Trailing 3-0 headed to the bottom of the fourth, the Lions got a rally going thanks to a Mollinedo single. Luis Rivera then drew a walk and Florida Memorial got on the board thanks to a Warner University (24-18, 8-10) error that allowed Mollinedo to cruise into home plate.

It was another Royals error that allowed the Lions to plate two more runs and tie the game at three then Josue Sanchez gave FMU the lead with a sacrifice fly that brought Young home.

Warner University responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead; FMU cut its deficit to 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth thanks to another Royals error; but Warner tacked on runs in the sixth and the eighth to pull away from the Lions.

Mollinedo was the most productive FMU batter in the second game Saturday, going 3-for-4 with 2 runs score.
