Lions’ Rally Falls Short, Drops Mid-Week Game To Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla. – Staring at a five-run deficit heading into the ninth inning, Florida Memorial University put on its rally caps and nearly erased difference – scoring three runs – but fell just short and allowed host Ave Maria University to escape with an 8-6 win Tuesday afternoon at Bowie Ballpark.

While it stings all the same, Tuesday's game was a non-conference matchup despite it featuring a pair of Sun Conference teams. Midweek (Tuesday or Wednesday) single games between TSC opponents do not count towards either team's conference record.

The Lions (12-18) trailed 8-3 headed into the final inning after Ave Maria scored three runs in the bottom of both the seventh and eighth innings. FMU's bats began to make some noise in the clutch but the rally started thanks to the Gyrenes' pitcher walking two of the first three Lions batters (Josue Sanchez and Carson Sorrell) he faced in the ninth. Florida Memorial began cutting into the deficit on a Gabriel Marinez one-out single to left, which scored Rohandry Javier – who ran as a courtesy runner for Sanchez.

After a Jalen Young fly out, Luis Rivera hit a two-out RBI single to left field – bringing home Sorrell. Lions head coach Florentino Burgos called on Yunior Sanchez as a pinch hitter and he delivered another two-out single, which plated Marinez.

Trailing 8-6 with the two on and Nate Harris Jr. representing the go-ahead run, Harris caught the wrong spot of an off-speed pitch and sent the ball floating into foul territory near left, which the Gyrenes' left fielder was able to snag – effectively ending the Lions' rally and the game.

Still, Tuesday was the 14th consecutive game that Florida Memorial registered at least six hits, as the Lions racked up 9 hits against Ave Maria.

Marinez and Rivera each had a pair of hits – both going 2-for-5 on the day. Marinez also had 2 runs scored, an RBI, a double. Young finished 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 walks drawn.

Ave Maria (13-23) had 10 hits Tuesday, including a fourth-inning solo home run.

FMU started freshman right hander Dawrin Ruiz Tuesday and he battled through 6 and two-thirds innings – keeping the Ave Maria relatively quiet until he had a few pitches get away from him as he hit three batters in the top of the seventh – before Burgos went to junior Ramon Garcia.

Ruiz did strike out 7 Tuesday – his second-highest single-game strikeout total this season.

The Lions will return home and prepare to host Sun Conference foe Warner University for a three-game weekend series beginning Friday at Harry T. Moore Field.
