Lions Drop Two In Semifinal Round, Eliminated From Black College World Series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – No matter what the final outcome of the inaugural Black College World Series, Florida Memorial University's baseball team made its mark.

After winning its first two games – and seeing sophomore slugger Nathan Harris Jr. win the BCWS Home Run Derby – in the first two days, FMU dropped two games Friday to be eliminated from the tournament.

The Lions fell to NCAA Division-II Bluefield State College (W. Va.) 10-3 in the first game of the semifinal round Friday which put them in the loser's bracket, where it took on Xavier University of Louisiana and couldn't get any late-game magic as they lost 7-5.

After falling to Bluefield State, Florida Memorial had to knock out Xavier University of Louisiana to stave off elimination.

FMU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to a 3-hit inning that was boosted by a couple of pitching mistakes – a wild pitch and two pass balls, one of which allowed Raul Fernandez to cross home plate and give the Lions the four-run lead.

Xavier responded in the bottom of the second with three runs of their own and tied the game at four in the bottom of the fifth inning after the Lions had two lapses on the mound – hitting a batter then allowing him to move into scoring position on a wild pitch – and the Gold Rush capitalized with an RBI single to right.

It looked like Florida Memorial would be able to burst the game open in the top of the seventh. The Lions started with Malik Shinozaki drawing a walk and stealing second, then Yunior Sanchez singled (after a Manuel Mollinedo fly out). With runners on the corners (first and third), Axel Gomez drew a walk – loading the bases with just one out.

Jalen Young took a sacrifice fly to bring home Shinozaki but that would be the only run FMU would get out of the inning as Ulises Rodriguez's infield fielder's choice led to Gomez being thrown out at second.

Clinging to a 5-4 lead FMU went scoreless in the top of the eighth while the Gold Rush put three runs on the board – aided by the Lions giving up three consecutive walks to load the bases.

Trailing 7-5 headed to the top of the ninth, FMU couldn't get any momentum going, as its final three at-bats produced a groundout and two fly outs – cementing the final margin and eliminating the Lions.

Catcher Luis Velandia recorded a team-high 2 hits in the second game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk drawn. While Rodriguez, Sanchez, and Sam Urso all went 1-for-4 to manufacture FMU's five total hits.

Head coach Florentino Burgos gave Carson Sorrell the ball as the starting pitcher and he ended up throwing 7 full innings, striking out three while giving up 6 hits, 7 runs, and 7 walks.

FMU FALLS TO BLUEFIELD STATE IN SEMIS
In the first game Friday, Florida Memorial did jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning – thanks to a Carson Sorrell sac-fly and a wild pitch that allowed Axel Gomez to cross home plate – but that would be the team's lone lead of the night.

Bluefield State took a 3-2 lead by the end of the third inning and after the Lions tied the game at three in the top of the fifth, the Big Blue scored four runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the seventh inning to take control of the game and hand FMU a 10-3 loss.

Florida Memorial did rack up 9 hits against Bluefield. Gomez led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Rohandry Javier was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored and 2 walks drawn. Sanchez also had two hits, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a walk.
