Lions Offense Has Slow Second Half, FMU Falls 19-7 To Cumberland University

LEBANON, Tenn. – Florida Memorial University had one of its lowest-producing offensive days – totaling just 179 yards of offense – and couldn't produce any points in the second half as it fell 19-7 to host Cumberland University Saturday afternoon at CU's Nokes-Lasater Stadium.

The Lions (0-5, 0-1 Mid-South Conference Sun Division) trailed just 9-7 at halftime but saw Cumberland take a 16-7 lead midway through the third then extend that lead to 19-7 with just over two minutes to play in the game.

Florida Memorial, which will host Keiser University this coming Saturday (Oct. 2), had six offensive possessions in the second half but none of them proved fruitful – having four of those drives end with punts and the other two halted by turnovers.

It was the Phoenix's last scoring drive that all but dashed FMU's rally hopes. Beginning the drive on their own 20-yard line with 8:18 left to play, Cumberland drove 73 yards in 11 plays – taking just over six minutes off the clock – before CU's Hunter Mathis knocked in a 24-yard field goal to put the Lions down by 12.

Florida Memorial sophomore quarterback Antoine Williams accounted for a lion's share of the 179 offensive yards Saturday. Williams completed 15 of his 28 passes for 109 yards with a 30-yard touchdown toss to George Young in the second quarter and two interceptions. Williams also gained 5 rushing yards Saturday.

Young, who set new modern-era records for rush attempts, rushing yards, and total yards from scrimmage last week at Faulkner University, led FMU in rushing Saturday with 60 yards on 16 carries. Young also tied for the game-high with 4 receptions for a game-high 52 yards.

Christian Edgerson also had 4 catches Saturday for the Lions, totaling 32 yards; Corey Stanley had 2 receptions for 14 yards; and Markell Lee had 3 catches but for just 4 yards.

Cumberland University (1-2) earned its first victory of the 2021 season while amassing 387 total yards of offense and racking up 14 penalties for 129 yards. The Phoenix had four different ball carriers finish with at least 40 rushing yards and manufactured 20 first downs Saturday.

Florida Memorial only had 10 first downs. To the team's credit, FMU only committed 8 penalties for 67 yards.

The Lions' defense did have a handful of standout performances Saturday. Defensive lineman Michael Powell set a new modern-era single-game record for total tackles with 14 (8 solo). Powell was also credited with a 1.5 tackles-for-loss and a forced fumble.

Joshua Mimms finished with 9 total tackles while Terry Smith and Denorio Humes were credited with 7 total tackles. Smith also registered a sack and pass breakup. Also, defensive lineman Philman Roundtree finished with 2 total tackles and a sack.
