Florida Memorial WBB Pulls Away From St. Thomas, Wins 83-69

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Senior guard Aliyah-Deen Ahmad recorded a game-high 21 points and was one of four Florida Memorial University players to score in double figures as the Lions used a big third quarter run to manufacture an 83-69 win over rival St. Thomas University Saturday afternoon in the FMU Wellness Center.
 
How It Happened
  • After taking a 41-34 into halftime and essentially playing even with the Bobcats through the opening minutes of the third quarter, FMU began to methodically pull away from STU midway through the third – turning a 47-39 advantage into a 70-49 lead by the end of the quarter.
  • Florida Memorial won the third quarter 29-15.
  • Ahmad, Keyanna Tolbert, Natalia Leguizamon, and Monique Esbrand starred as the Lions took control of the game, as the quartet accounted for all 29 third-quarter points.
  • The Lions had one of its better shooting performances Saturday, knocking down 10 total three-pointers.
  • Leading comfortably in the fourth, Florida Memorial saw the Bobcats make a small dent in its lead with STU winning the final 10 minutes 20-13 to cement the final 83-69 margin.
  • FMU did a solid job of contesting the Bobcats' shots and held St. Thomas 31.6 percent shooting from the field.

  • Ahmad shot 8-for-13 from the field, 3-for-6 from three-point range, and 2-of-3 from the free throw line Saturday.
  • Ahmad also dished out a game-high 8 assists.
  • Leguizamon finished with 17 points and 6 rebounds while Tolbert had 16 points and 7 rebounds before she fouled out during the fourth quarter.
  • Esbrand recorded a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards while also adding 4 steals, 2 steals, and a block.
