FMU MBB Topped By Rival St. Thomas University Saturday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Senior guard Corey Benton scored a game-high 28 points, and the team recorded a season-high 12 blocks, but Florida Memorial University fell into an early hole that it could never dig itself out of and ultimately fell 90-73 to visiting St. Thomas University Saturday evening in the FMU Wellness Center.

How It Happened
  • After trailing by 13 at halftime, FMU cut its deficit to seven (48-41) following a Benton three-pointer with 16:13 left in the second half.
  • St. Thomas responded to the Lions' spurt with a 13-2 run of their own to push its lead to 18 points in a span of two minutes.
  • Florida Memorial (9-7, 5-4 The Sun Conference) fell behind by as many as 29 during the second half before shaving off a dozen points over the inconsequential final seven minutes of the game to create the final 90-73 margin.
  • FMU's momentum early in the second half – as it had cut its deficit to single digits – was halted by a technical foul on junior Jacobi Gordon. The forward was called for a reach in foul and sprinted the opposite direction in disagreement with the call – prompting the officials to call a technical foul and resulting in Gordon fouling out of the game as the personal foul and technical foul were his fourth and fifth fouls respectively.
  • St. Thomas (8-7, 5-4) swayed the momentum completely in its favor with its two-minute run, which included an emphatic alley-oop dunk that seemed to sap the Lions of potential rallying power.

Inside The Box Score
  • Benton was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line and finished 9-of-19 from the field.
  • Florida Memorial was out-rebounded 38-46 Saturday; Brent Holcombe led the Lions with 7 boards while STU's Dwayne Russell had 11.
  • FMU shot just 3-for-20 from the three-point line. Benton accounted for two of the three-pointers and Holcombe added one.
  • Holcombe was the only other FMU player to finish with a double-digit point total, totaling 12 points in 28 minutes.
  • Four Bobcats players finished with at least 11 points, led by Augustus Stone and Russell each scoring 20 points.
  • FMU committed 18 turnovers while STU had just nine.
  • Mubashar Ali and Cheikh Kebe each finished with 4 blocks.

  • Florida Memorial never led Saturday, only tying the game once (4-4).
  • Saturday marked the third time this season that the Lions have recorded seven total assists and the team is 0-3 in those contests.
  • FMU falls to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in the Sun Conference.
  • St. Thomas University improves to 8-7 and 5-4 in the Sun Conference.
