Shorthanded FMU WBB Topped By Webber International Saturday, Falls To 3-Seed

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Playing without senior and 2021 All-Sun Conference First Team performer Keaynna Tolbert, Florida Memorial University had an ill-timed poor shooting night as it fell to host Webber International University 77-69 Saturday afternoon in a game that saw the No. 2 seed in the final Sun Conference standings up for grabs.

With the Lions losing Saturday, they slot into the No. 3 seed in the final TSC standings, meaning they will now host an opening round game this coming week in the Sun Conference Postseason Tournament while Webber International will enjoy a bye into the semifinals as the No. 2 seed.

How It Happened
  • FMU made just four three-pointers Saturday and ended up shooting 16.7 percent from long range.
  • The Lions trailed 70-67 with 2:20 left to play but Webber would go on a quick 6-0 spurt to pull away.
  • Florida Memorial missed its final three shots and last two free throws over the final 19 seconds to cement the 77-69 loss.
  • Florida Memorial led by two (38-36) at halftime but saw the Warriors open the third quarter on a 16-5 run.
  • WIU's third-quarter run gave it a lead that it would never relinquish.
  • The Lions drew within one twice in the fourth quarter – cutting Webber's lead to 62-61 and 64-63 on buckets by Aliyah-Deen Ahmad and Monique Esbrand respectively.

  • Four Webber International players scored in double figures, led by LeAndra Franklin's 20 points.
  • Ahmad had just 7 points along with 5 rebounds and a team-high 3 steals.
  • WIU's Amaya Small had a 17-point and 13-rebound double-double.
